The Reflect Project - Portraits of Prisoners by Trent Bell:

The Reflect Project by Trent Bell is a profound piece that shows incarcerated individuals with a letter to their younger self behind their portrait. In the link above, there is a video of the artist's post-production process which is really helpful to watch to see his process. I love this project because it is a photography and design piece, which is something I didn't consider doing for my capstone. The content of the piece conveys deep emotions, lessons, and reflection on the people's life experiences that led them to incarceration.
Some of my favorite quotes include:
- "Normal guys who have made bad decisions."
- "Seeing the convict as human and not just a criminal."

Another form of media that I had not considered using was the audio/podcast medium. This podcast in specific is really interesting because it is solely produced in prison. The sound designer does a really amazing job capturing prison life, through music and natural sounds.
I have listened to multiple episodes, and the content educates the audience on what life in prison is like, what happens inside, prison communication, post-incarceration, etc. The podcast is a great research point in terms of interview questions, getting an inside look into the dynamics of prison, and how to navigate sensitive content.
I think it is a great direction to go in analyzing all these different pieces of media that cover prison life and self expression in such a restricted environment. Maybe you could also research the ideas of the themes and messages of the plays themselves to further get an idea of why Shakespeare specifically connects so well with people in prison? Just an idea. Overall great research its very well done and very concise, with excellent sources, human connection points, and data so far.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia!! I think these pieces are amazing and perfect as inspirations for your project! Your summary of the content as well as what they mean to you are very clear, and I am so glad you have landed on a true passion! However, I might suggest writing a little bit more about how you plan to use the inspirations gleaned from these pieces in your project. How do you see elements from these sources being implemented or guiding you through your personal process? Otherwise, wonderful sources, writing, and images!!
